Coverage Levels and Policy Specifics of the Rutgers (Aetna Student Health) Policy

The health insurance policy that can be purchased through Rutgers University is underwritten by the Chickering Group of Aetna. This policy meets the University's minimum health insurance requirements.

What is covered by the Aetna Student Health insurance plan?
You should think of your coverage in two levels: basic and major medical. Aetna Student Health's program provides both of these levels, as follows:

Basic
Student Health Services Plus gives you access to the on-campus Student Health Centers and provides up to $5,000 coverage. There is no required deductible to use the services of any of the health centers on campus. Please note that only adults can be seen at the Student Health Centers. The Student Health Centers cannot provide medical services to children. Children must go to an off-campus doctor.

Major Medical

The name of the major medical plan is "Major Medical Plan with Rx Card." Major Medical Plan with Rx Card gives you access to off-campus private doctors or hospitals and to emergency medical services. The Major Medical Plan with Rx Card has a $250 deductible per year which you must pay for each illness or injury. Under major medical insurance the insurance company will pay 80% of the usual and customary charges up to $10,000 of incurred medical expenses. After $10,000 the insurance will pay 100% of the usual and customary charges up to a maximum of $250,000.

Going to an off-campus doctor or hospital
Should you need to go to an off-campus doctor or hospital, the cost to you will be $250 or less, depending on the doctor's or hospital's charges for the visit.

What to do in the case of a medical emergency
In cases of EMERGENCY, call "911" emergency assistance or go directly to the Emergency Room of the nearest hospital. For example, if you are in the New Brunswick-Piscataway area when an emergency occurs, call "911" for an ambulance or go directly to either Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital or St. Peter's Medical Center. Please be aware that visits to a hospital emergency room and ambulance transportation will be covered by the Aetna Student Health policy only in the case of a true medical emergency. (A true medical emergency is any condition which will cause death or permanent disability if you do not receive immediate treatment. Injuries from car accidents, broken bones, or heart attacks are examples of emergencies.

What is NOT covered by the Aetna Student Health insurance plan?
While most "pre-existing conditions" (any medical conditions that existed and were treated before an insurance policy was purchased) that can easily be treated by Rutgers Student Health Services are generally included in the Student Health Services Plus plan, the Major Medical Plan with Rx Card provides treatment for "pre-existing conditions" during the first 6 months of coverage. Following the first 6 months, there may be limited coverage for "pre-existing conditions."

The Aetna Student Health Plan does not cover routine eye examinations, routine dental treatment, or the cost of medicines. Eye and teeth problems resulting from an injury may be covered in some circumstances. Aetna Student Health does offer discount programs for coverage not included in the Rutgers plan, however. The discount program for Vision can help you save money on eyeglasses or contact lenses, and the discount program for Dental can help you save money on anything from routine cleanings to root canals.
