Orientation Information:

The Center for Faculty and Student Services (CIFSS) conducts a comprehensive orientation for new international students every Fall and an abbreviated orientation every Spring semester. The orientation is designed to help incoming students adjust to life in the United States and at Rutgers. The staff of CIFSS and a team of trained student volunteers guide new students in arranging to move into residence halls, open bank accounts, obtain social security numbers, take campus tours, go shopping, register for classes, meet other new students and make new friends.

The orientation also includes a series of informative workshops and sessions which discuss the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for foreign students to study, work and travel in the United States. Orientation sessions include such topics as: How to Stay in Legal Status, How to Access Campus and Community Resources, Personal Safety, Staying Healthy, Academic Advising, Computing on Campus, Library Services, Bringing Dependents to the U.S., and many more.

Those who register for orientation will also have time to relax a bit and meet other new international students. The Fall orientation includes two picnics, an ice cream social, performances, trips and receptions held throughout the week, Which provide ample opportunity to make friends with others who share the excitement and nervousness of being in a new place and a new environment far from home.

During orientation new students also get an opportunity to meet officers of the International Student Associations. The International Student Association (ISA) is the undergraduate student association at Rutgers which promotes international and cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. They sponsor a variety of events, including the Annual International Fashion and Talent Show, international buffets, etc. The International Student Affairs Committee (ISAC) is a committee of the Graduate Student Association and is made up of international graduate students. It organizes various cross-cultural events throughout the year to make new students feel closer to home and get them acquainted with students from around the world. ISAC's Multicultural Pizza Hour is a very popular event held two or more times per month throughout the academic year.

Detailed orientation schedules are distributed only to those who register for the orientation itself. We recommend that you pre-register for the Fall International Student Orientation; you may do this by completing the orientation registration form provided in your admissions packet and submitting it with your payment of $57.50 to the Center for International Faculty and Student Services. On-site registration fot the Fall will also be available. No registration or payment is required for the Spring orientation.
