Updates for May 14, 2008

Dear International Students of Rutgers-New Brunswick:

Below are today's important reminder notices from the Center for International Services. Because some of our messages apply to ALL nonimmigrants, these notices are automatically sent to all nonimmigrant students enrolled at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Most messages, however, apply only to F-1 and/or J-1 students. We label most messages to facilitate your identification of which messages may apply to you personally.

All F-1 and J-1 students on Rutgers' visa sponsorship are required to know information that is provided in these "Notices" and to follow reminders and instructions that apply to their own situations

This is NOT a subscription email list. These notices are sent periodically to an automatically-generated list based upon two data elements from the University's main Student Records Data Base: (1) your coding as a nonimmigrant in the U.S.; and (2) your **official University email address**.  If either of these data elements is inaccurately coded in the University's main Student Records Data Base, it will affect whether or not you are included on this notice list. If you know of any Rutgers-New Brunswick nonimmigrant students who did not receive this notice, or if you are a permanent resident or citizen of the U.S and should not be receiving these notices, please contact Susan Maldonado at
susanm@rci.rutgers.edu.

2. ***** 2007 TAXES REVISTED: EMAIL SCAMS AND A NOTE FROM “CINTAX”

TAX SCAMS VIA EMAIL: DO NOT RESPOND IF YOU RECEIVE AN EMAIL "FROM THE IRS."

The IRS has reported that there are a series of FRADULENT emails circulating to foreign nationals asking for personal information to prepare a refund.  PLEASE be aware that IRS NEVER sends an email N E V E R!   Do not respond to any emails that say they are from the IRS.   If the IRS has a question, they have the taxpayers ID number and will NOT ask for it instead a letter will be sent to the person that contains the number.  IF the person did not include an SSN or ITIN on the tax return, the tax return may be rejected and the IRS will ask the person to file a new return using the correct number. In no case will an email ever be sent.

Please also note that the people who run the nonresident software program "CINTAX" will NEVER send an email to any foreign national, any client, or ANYONE asking for an SSN or ITIN.  NEVER send your SSN or ITIN in an email doing so is a very big security risk.  There is NEVER a reason to put a full SSN or ITIN into an email.

IF YOU USED "CINTAX" AND GET A REJECTED 1040NR-EZ IN THE MAIL

If you used the CINTAX program on our website to file your nonresident tax return and recieve in the mail a "rejected Form 1040NR-EZ," DO NOT WORRY!!!!  If this has happened to you please read the attached email we received from CINTAX and follow instructions.  CINTAX will take care of the problem--it is nothing to worry about.

3. ***** F-1 STUDENTS: NEW OPT REGULATIONS--UPDATES

A reminder to all F-1 students that the most recently-updated information on the new OPT regulations, including guidance from SEVIS on how schools are supposed to implement the rule, is available for you to read and visit on a regular basis at http://www.nafsa.org/regulatory_information.sec/29_month_opt_rule_updates (scroll down to see updates; for related information, check the resources listed on the top right section of the page).

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: The Center will also be holding ONE MORE SPECIAL WORKSHOP ON THE NEW OPT REGULATIONS this semester.  It will be held on FRIDAY, MAY 16 FROM 10 A.M -12 NOON IN THE COOK STUDENT CENTER, ROOM 202 B&C. This special workshop is NOT for students who are graduating and actually applying for OPT (for that situation, please attend one of our "Post Graduate Employment" workshops).  The special workshop on May 16 is ONLY for students interested in learning more about the new OPT rules for reasons other than applying for post-completion OPT within the next 2 months.

4. ***** CENTER AND ALL UNIVERSITY OFFICES CLOSED ON MONDAY, MAY 26 (MEMORIAL DAY)

Our Center and all other university offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, for a national holiday (Memorial Day).  Banks and many other businesses will be closed that day as well.  We will reopen on a regular schedule at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27.

5. ***** ONCE AGAIN, CONGRATULATIONS TO GRADUATING STUDENTS

We said it before, but we can never say it TOO much!!  To all of our students who are graduating next week, we wish you much success in your personal and professional lives, and we hope you will remember your time at Rutgers with fondness and good memories.  Let us know how you're doing--email us and tell us how you are using your Rutgers education as you advance in your careers!  And if you ever come back this way in the future, stop in and say hello!
